The Basics of Debating

DETAILS: Education Workshop Night

OVERVIEW:

This is an educational evening specifically directed toward newcomers to the club,
and those wishing to further develop their style, thinking ability and presence at debates.
The aim of this meeting is to allow those not totally familiar with debating,
concepts and constructs to have an event where there will be an open evening to identify:

How to generating opening arguments as PM, and follow up responses of LO, MG and MO.

Listening to identify the prior speakers main arguments and rationale for them
Generating responses and well thought out logical counter arguments
Outlining your response, developing cogent speaking techniques
Using pauses, hand movements, movement at the lectern and eye contact with the audience and
Closing with the maximum effect.

We will have many of our experienced speakers and debaters on hand to discuss how they handle various aspects of debating.

Remember, there is NO SET WAY to debate.
There are rules and conventions, but you have to create your own personal style.
This is what will suit your delivery, and thinking processes.

Here is a provisional outline of the evening
7:00: Open
Overview Jim S
7:10: Collect a debate topic from each attendee.

7:15: Identify Proposers, Opposers and Adjudicators for first topic
3 minute for overview and proposing two arguments
2 minute for opposing it
2 minutes to adjudicate both

For the following debate:
Money is more useful than brains
Definition:
Money: Cash, Credit, any Exchangeable Monetary Currency
More Useful More Acceptable, Better, Improvement
Brains: Intellectual Ability

7:50 (?) Identify Proposers, Opposers and Adjudicators
3 minute for overview and proposing two arguments
2 minute for opposing it
2 minutes to adjudicate both

Gas Taxes Must be used for Roads

Definition:
Gas Taxes: Taxes collected from motorists from Gas Pump sales throughout Ontario
Must: Imperative, without exception
Used for: to be directed toward adding and maintaining
Roads: Provincial and Municipal maintained Roads

8:30: Take several topic/ resolutions and discus the validity as a proposition, and improve for debate.

8:45 (?)
Take one of these topics and run with it
Identify a definition with the floor
Break into groups and identify one argument and develop it for presenting
A PM from each group takes the podium with each argument and fully develops it as a presentation as in a PM opening address
Feed back from adjudicators/ floor
Do this till you feel good/ arguments run out.

OR

Child Labour is a crime against society
Definition:
Child Labour: Children under the age of 16, earning hourly wages in industrial environments.
Crime: Socially and Morally Reprehensible
Society: You Decide

Break into groups and identify one argument and develop it for presenting
A PM from each group takes the podium with each argument and fully develops it as a presentation as in a PM opening address
Feed back from adjudicators/ floor
Do this till you feel good/ arguments run out.

LO, PM summations
Adjudication

Adjourn for a beer etc.
